My family added 5 ducklings to our household this spring, and managed to keep them all alive until yesterday, living out by our pond. Last night, something - assuming a raccoon, got a hold of one of our girls through the 6-sided box we keep them in at night and tore a big chunk of flesh off... She was still alive this morning, but in really bad shape, so I had to put her out of her misery. Luckily my wife went down first this morning to feed them, and not my daughter. Not the way I wanted to start the morning. The kids were sad about it, but took the news okay. The circle of life can be cruel. Hopefully we manage to keep the rest alive for some time.
